Growing up in Eastern Europe, I witnessed how masculinity is shaped by entrenched cultural expectations — strength, sacrifice, and endurance.
In times of political conflict and oppression, these demands intensify. Thousands of men are compelled into participation, their bodies positioned as instruments of national duty.
Within such structures, deviation becomes suspect and is often suppressed.
Through emotionally charged and deliberately exaggerated gestures, the male body in this work becomes a site of resistance.
Movement embodies the tension between individuality and imposed national gender roles, expressing a collective longing for creativity, sensitivity, self-expression and emotional understanding.
By unsettling and subtly mocking conventional postures of strength and control and contrasting them with playful, tender, and vulnerable poses,
the work exposes masculinity as something diverse, performed and fluid rather than fixed or inherent.
The project also addresses the internalised shame often associated with being Eastern European, a region frequently reduced to narratives of conflict, corruption, and crisis.
By foregrounding vulnerability and intimacy, and by challenging the notion of a singular Eastern European identity, this series seeks to restore complexity and
reclaim an artistic voice for communities too often simplified by geopolitical narratives.
